چکیده

We present the results of colour-selection of candidate high redshift (2.6 < z < 3.9) galaxies within the Hubble Deep Field based on the Ly-break at 912Å. We find 8 such objects in the region, giving a comoving number density comparable to that of nearby bright galaxies (for a flat q0=0.5, H0=100 kms Mpc universe). We provide basic data on the properties of these objects, and show that despite their absolute magnitude being significantly brighter than L∗ (typically MB = -22), they are generally smaller than nearby galaxies. Furthermore, visual inspection of their images shows that they are all highly disturbed systems, with multiple nuclei, tails and plumes, suggesting that they are undergoing merging processes similar to most nearby starburst galaxies. Theoretical models suggest that galaxies form by accumulation of numerous subcomponents, and we suggest that we are seeing this process underway in these objects. It is thus possible that the epoch of galaxy formation might have been discovered.

Candidate High Redshift and Primeval Galaxies in Hubble Deep Field South

We present the results of colour selection of candidate high redshift galaxies in Hub-ble Deep Field South (HDF-S) using the Lyman dropout scheme. The HDF-S data we discuss were taken in a number of different filters extending from the near–UV (F300W) to the infrared (F222M) in two different fields. This allows us to select candidates with redshifts from z∼3 to z∼12. We find 15 candidate z∼3 ob...

Serendipitously Detected Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field1

We present a catalog of 74 galaxies detected serendipitously during a campaign of spectroscopic observations of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF) and its environs. Among the identiÐed objects are Ðve candidate Lya emitters at a galaxy cluster at z\ 0.85, and a Chandra source with a heretofore z Z 5, undetermined redshift of z\ 2.011. We report redshifts for 25 galaxies in the central HDF, 13 of...

A Lower Limit on Ωm −ΩΛ Using Gravitational Lensing in the Hubble Deep Field

We calculate the expected number of multiply-imaged galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), using photometric redshift information for galaxies with mI < 27 that were detected in all four HDF passbands. A comparison of these expectations with the observed number of strongly lensed galaxies places a lower limit on the current value of Ωm − ΩΛ, where Ωm is the cosmological mass density of the un...

The Hubble Deep Fields

■ Abstract The Hubble space telescope observations of the northern Hubble deep field, and more recently its counterpart in the south, provide detections and photometry for stars and field galaxies to the faintest levels currently achievable, reaching magnitudes V ∼ 30. Since 1995, the northern Hubble deep field has been the focus of deep surveys at nearly all wavelengths. These observations hav...
